Where a drain field is hardest to site

The USDA rates every mapped parcel in the country for its suitability as a septic drain field. We publish that rating on 1,883 of our city pages. These are places where effectively all the rated ground comes back "Very limited", and each one fails for a different reason.

Share of rated ground classed "Very limited", with the limiting feature the survey records most often. Survey data describes the area and is not a site evaluation of any particular lot.

12 of the 50 states publish a septic license roster we can check against. In the rest a company's license reads as unverified, and that is a gap in the public record rather than a mark against the company.

We also hold records for Puerto Rico and District of Columbia, which are not states and are not counted in the 50. They have pages because the companies in them are real.

Before you hire

Four things worth asking

Ask for the license number

Not "are you licensed". The number, and the name it is held under. That is what a state roster can be checked against, and it is what we match on here.

Ask who pumps and who installs

They are often different licenses and sometimes different companies. A pumper is not automatically certified to replace a failed drain field.

Ask what the county requires

Septic permitting is county-level almost everywhere. A contractor who works your county weekly will know its rules without looking them up.

Get the tank located before you dig

An honest quote for a repair starts with finding the tank and the field. A price given over the phone with no site visit is a guess.

It is not a rating of workmanship

The score counts records. A record cannot tell you whether a crew showed up on time or cleaned up after itself.

It is not complete

A company with no website, no reviews and no license on file may still be the best one in the county. It will score poorly here and we will show you why.

No company paid to be listed and none can pay to rank higher. Claiming a listing here is free and does not raise a score.
